forever in debt

Everyone was having giant ALL CAPS heart attacks about the (flimsy) rumor that RPattz was set to play Kurt Cobain in a Courtney Love approved Nirvana biopic. As far as I have read, the talk is just talk..but that didn't keep it from being a topic of debate last night at Scratcher while Hunter, Kat, Andrew and I got whiskey drunk. I feel sorta Switzerland about it, Hunter thinks it's so terrible it might be fascinating, and Kat was undecided, as she has major RP throbs.

Then we starting talking about the Heart Shaped Box video... I think I have to post it.

I have a theory that my generation has a speciality in darkdarkblack humor & a twisted view of the world precisely because of stuff like this being firmly entrenched in our pop culture history.

You could NEVER make this video today!
I mean...one of the biggest bands in the world at this moment (1993) and their top single's video is a supersaturated dream of white-haired child KKKs, a wizened Santa on the cross, abortion trees and a fat lady in an anatomy suit.

As Hunter was saying...pretty intense shit to watch after school (over and over and over again on MTV).

oh, PS? This video is SEVENTEEN YEARS OLD. Put that in yr wherethefuckdoestimego container.

rude way?

You state how this would not get played today because of the shock value. Lady Gaga is one of the most popular performers today and many of her videos are very shocking in nature. Although its in a very different way than this video, I think there is still hope out there for cutting edge music videos that aren't afraid to get into some real territory.

I 100% agree with you, this blows Lady Gaga shock value out of the water.

I'm not sure you can say one generation has a darker sense of humor or outlook than another. I think you can say that the ability to express such thoughts and feelings is constantly changing, as are the means of communicating them (I'm not sure anything in '93 was darker than 'Naked Lunch' or 'Heroin').

The early 90s seem more open only in retrospect, at the time they seemed incredibly stifling. Nevermind came out a few weeks before the Hill-Thomas hearings and a few years after the PMRC.

If any freedom existed it was mainly commercial driven - labels, networks and publishers were caught flat-footed and were scrambling to fill a market they didn't anticipate. It was an open moment but not necessarily a darker one.

Is it bad that the crows make me laugh?

I feel the same way about RP playing Kurt. I really hope they get a lesser know actor to play both him and Courtney just so that it doesn't take away from the story.

Is it just me or does the KKK kid look a heckuva lot like little Mary Kate or Ashley?
