say it ain't so

Today is my last full day here in Oregon, which I really honestly think is my magical happy place.

SAUVIE ISLAND BRIDGE AKA THE BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA, BASICALLY
Today I am going to spend my day trying to pack (the Thrift Orgy of my first 5 days here is making things REALLY FUCKING HARD*), sampling the last of the great food bounty of the Pacific Northwest, and trying make Claire & Jona's house as spic and span as they left it. My posting probs won't be back BACK until Wednesday.

Since Doree has been here, we've really taken advantage of our rented Chevy Malibu (Lloyd Dobler's car of choice) and hit the far flung DELIGHTS of Oregon, namely Sauvie Island and the coast. We also did a 6 course dinner at BEAST and had the BEST Banh Mi I have maybe ever had at the brand new Bunk Bar

Here are the Greatest Hits:

"SUBSTITUTIONS POLITELY DECLINED"

This was the 3rd course- Milk braised pork shoulder. I MEAN.

I have never been to a farm..Please try not to let that shock you. You could pick any and all that you wanted. This was the most fun I have had in a loooong time!

Our peach bounty. Gonna make pies tonight!

Blackberry stained fingers. Pickin' my way through black berry brambles..I felt like Anne of Green Gables.

There were flowers too, if you fancy that for your basket.

FASHION SUNFLOWERS!!!!

Bunk Bar pickle plate. Best I have ever had, honest.

The coast is unreal and sooo Goonies!!

The backpack that usually holds my laptop was used for our picnic lunch. The 50s cardigan was $3 from a yard sale and the vintage 9 West sandals were $1 from an estate sale (they broke! wah wahhhhh)

I can't believe my vacation is over tomorrow. I miss my boyfriend insanely, but trading 65 degrees for 100 degrees seems like a punishment. New York summer, I truly loathe you.

Thank you for being the best thing ever EVER Portland...until next summer!

PS. Hunter and I started a food tumblr called Snackminded. More PDX food pix there, and more more more to come!

PPS All photos taken with my iPhone 4, which I really really really love more than my Lumix (sowwy)

high priestess chic

Well I just don't know, but I am pretty sure that there is nothing better for the last Friday of the summer than an impossibly bizarre (and definitely homemade) kimono sleeved wonderfrock.

Dress from Atlas Vintage in Seattle, a place that I can never seem to leave EMPTY-HANDED.

Aldo peep-toe lace-ups. Who was the wonderfully insane woman who made this?
PS I cut about 47 feet off the bottom.

I tell myself it was Mrs Roper. Who is a constant source of inspiration here at WL HQ (aka whereever tehre is free WeeFee and cheap STRONG coffee)

I slept terribly last night, thank GAGA I have my dress to keep me awake.
Today is Doree's first full day in Portland ever (yes!), and the beginning of the end of my visit here (boo!)..have to take advantage of the last bits of OREGON while I can!

HAPPY WEEKEND, LOVERPANTSES!!

please note my new title

I couldn't be more excited, delighted or honored to be the subject of this drawing by the supremely talented (when does your art book come out, Jane???), funny and fantastic Jane Aldridge, of Sea of Shoes (one of my most favorite sites, obvs)

My hair has never looked better.

It was also serve as a way to preserve the DEAR MEMORY of my BELOVED KAREN WALKER SUNGLASSES, which I left on the number 17 bus in Seattle on Tuesday (I have tears in my eyes). I was so horrifed by THIS that I lost all common sense.

RIP my most perfect sunglasses of all time, rest..in..peace.

**SUPERDUPER AMAZING ADDENDUM!! At the urging of a few Seattle-ites, I called the transit system Lost & Found (which I thought would be a major waste of time)..AND GUESS WHAT?!
MY SUNGLASSES WERE THERE! What an incredible, honest, DELIGHTFUL city you are, Seattle! PRAISE JAH! ******

color chameleon

When I spend a lot of time alone, I start to get weird ideas about "cool". Which I really like.

Because at least then I am less bored with getting dressed, which has been happening to me a lot lately (although dressing for deep summer is my least favorite activity, so that is probably to blame).

When you are dressing for nothing and no one in particular, aside from wandering and reading and watching Season 1 of 21 Jump Street on instant Netflix, you can really get FREE with the contents of your suitcase.

PRE-COFFEE DAZE FAZE
I bought this crocheted multi-colored cardigan at Value Village last week. It goes with anything, in a ridiculous way.
So I wore it with this patterned rayon dress, which I have to admit is reworked vintage from American Apparel. It has an open back and pockets- I was totally seduced!

Happy Socks, Dolce Vita sandals, SFK camera strap.

I mean, I don't know. I'm on vacation. In Oregon. This is perfect? This is perfect!

lint is a shell's best friend

I used to be on the fence about the genius of Jenny Slate.
Well..clearly I was an idiot.

Jenny Slate (and Dean Fleischer-Camp), you are a genius.
I could watch this video all day..I might watch this video all day. I'm on vacation and so you can't stop me.

MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON from Dean Fleischer-Camp on Vimeo.

This is honestly one of the best things I've ever seen. If you want to hear my really real REAL laugh? The embarrassing one? where I sound like Bart Simpson?...watch me watch this video.

I wanna hang glide on a Dorito.

estate sales: be still my heart

Saturday morning, bright and early, Shayla picked me up and we hit the estate sale scene here in Portland. We went to two whole house affairs that ab-so-lute-ly blew my mind. I mean. These were insane collectors after my own heart.

My heart aches for all the great UNBELIEVABLY CHEAP home stuff that would be the perfect way to decorate my apartment...if it wasn't 2,800 miles away. Sighs.

Well there was still SO much to sort through, honestly I could've bought a whole car load.

A few gems (all for mere cents or a dollar or two):

Amelia Earhart goggles? Glasses? Red baron bifocals? WHAT ARE THESE? I have no idea, but I could not leave them behind. They are so incredible, who wore these?

A dust jacket-less first edition of Truman Capote's In Cold Blood.

Obsessed with that Kennedy pin.

"An artist's crayon at scholar's price"

Such a sucker for old notebooks and datebooks and diarys!!!

THIS WAS INSIDE THE OTHER ADDRESS BOOK!
Elizabeth Roberts, Psychic Consultant.
I mean..I can't, it's so delightful.

But maybe the BEST?

Maybe my favorite sneaky find, which I honestly didn't realize til I was in the car!

The lil' gold pencil (if you twist it, the lead pokes out) pendant above, which was with the lil red books, is almost exactly like:

Joanie's ever present gold pen!
SUPER SCORE!

what's with today, today?

Oh nothing..Just a mid-length cotton palazzo culotte with cheetah faces on them..you know, CASUAL.

Jacket, camisole, belt, pants, shoes: all thrifted. The pants and shoes were from my epic day with Claire, the jacket is from Connecticut, the shirt and belt are ancient.

The book is my current obsessive reading selection, it's RIVETING.

Among many other things, I wish I had been graced with some sort of upper lip. Woulda been nice. I guess I save on lipstick that way.

***ADDENDUM:
PS Apparently I just got called out for BENES-ING. If being Elaine is wrong, I don't wanna be right.

8/18/10

close enough

OH, WHAT'S THIS?

WHAT WAS THIS THING FOR ANYWAYS?
EQUESTRIENNE BOOTS? MAGNUMS OF VEUV
E? PHONE BOOKS?

Just a perfect, enormous, oddly-shaped canvas & leather mega-tote that I thrifted at the Goodwill recently, ya know: CASUAL AWESOMENESS.

I am beyond psyched about this one.I think I'd like to get my initials foil-stamped on the little leather patch there, how's that for class-ay? Not classy enough? Hm. How bout this bit of trivia: I used this to lug home groceries today in my bike basket; on top of a ton of clothes I balanced a bottle of wine, an US WEEKLY, 4 yogurts and spelt bread. (SOUNDS LIKE A PARTY!)

I enjoy the fact that is bears more than a passing resemblance to this divine Céline tote that I have pined for:

...but will never ever be mine, but who cares? The one I got is better; I mean it was 3 dollars.

God bless Oregonian second-hand treasures.

8/17/10

your problem is not my problem

Oh hey look, it's me in 1965. (In my dreams)

But really, if I was one of the "girls" at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, I would DEF want to be this swan-necky cuckoo bird from last Sunday's episode (if I couldn't be Joanie, oh miss Joanie) ! I think I have a dress like that somewhere (or curtains. or an acid flashback inducing tea cozy. something.)

Has she been on before?! More more more!

simple steps to happiness

A few weeks ago I posted my new addiction-within-an-addiction on the White Lightning Facebook page (which is delightful, please "like" it because I like you, so why aren't you reading it???) and it seemed to TOUCH PEOPLE'S HEARTSTRINGS.

Here is a small step-by-step to true happiness, by way of coffee in your coffee.

Start with an empty glass! This one is thick plastic that looks like cheap plastic, and has a lid and straw that are all reuseable, like a to go cup for FOR LIFE. Mine is from Urban Outfitters. I like it because it makes me feel less guilty about not being a hippie. PLUS it makes life cheaper!

FILL IT WITH ICE CUBES THAT ARE FROZEN BLOCKS OF COFFEE AKA ICEY GOLD. This is best thing I have ever done.
Here's the recipe: Pour cooled coffee into ice cube trays.  Put trays in freezer. I THINK YOU CAN HANDLE IT.

Fill your cup with cold coffee (we fill a giant mason jar with coffee every night), and be SO proud of yourself for your super-efficient mode of caffeinating yourself.

Suck it down, run around the block, repeat repeat repeat until no one around you can handle your EXCITEMENT (haters gonna hate). Life is good!

plumbing the depths

I have only been here 5 days and I think I have successfully exhausted my meager thrifting budget.

I've spent 1 day with Audra, trolling North Portland's finest vintage and thrift options and 1 day with Claire going to far corners in the SE (to not only shop but to buy strange things at a Russian deli and eat them in the parking lot) and I have found, among other things, cheetah face palazzo pants, a 60s Peter Pan collar dickie (verrryyy Miu Miu), 3 pairs of really important shoes, the perfect denim shirt, a sheer polka dot dress, and some bike shorts.

I am in heaven, basically.

VINTAGE JANZTEN PLAYSUIT, VINTAGE FRENCH TOAST DENIM JACKET, DOLCE VITA SANDALS, KAREN WALKER SUNGLASSES, GOLD HORSE MEDALLION SUPERJANGLE

Audra took me took a bunch of places, thrift and vintage. I liked Lady Bird, the prices were beyond fair (I got a dgeat dress for $10) and I liked the vibe.

Regrettably unpurchased: both sunglasses AND pasties.

The Oregon Leather Co. Wowza.

Russian delicacies. Is a cookie? Is it a cracker? WHO KNOWS! DON'T WORRY, BE HAPPY!

MAGIC STICKS (with cacao glaze!).

Lovely vintage shoe score. $7 bones! The leather weaves up into laces! They are sling back with a low heel. I love them so so very much. They are proving to be controversial with normies.

CONTROVERSIAL SHOE SCORE? A knockoff of high-heeled Timberlands.
I don't know what to say.

I kept picturing them with tights and little dresses and a denim coat. It feels really fun to me for the fall. They were only 5 dollars, I am gonna be FREE to act on my WHIMS. You should too!!!!

I will try to start doing proper outfit pics to show some more of my scores..I just hate the way I am looking lately- not very CAMERA READY!!!!
