A few months ago I had the unbelievably good fortune to meet the Ginger Queen Of My Teenage Dreams, Ms Karen Elson.

So we've got a real FAUX FALL happening here. It's grey, and it's rainy but it's oddly humid and my hair is in a perma-Gilda (but like, not cute).

So I do what I can; I wear a jacket, I keep the leg bare, I wear shoes high enough to keep me out of puddles and I look for color combinations that keep me findable in the monsoon.

These are favorite items that I've never combined in this way before, way to go me!
The newest addition is the cobalt blue silky lil tank number- a recent OfAKind edition with TUCKER, who I adoooooree. It's a shade of blue that I do not own otherwise and I find myself adding it to really crazy color combinations (there is no other way for me).
Sidenote, I can't tell you how insanely pleasurable it is to have a belt that matches this skirt perfectly for no good reason. IT'S THE LITTLE THINGS, YA KNOW?

And for the record:
These creepers are best ridiculous purchase I've ever made. So choice.

When I was in LA last week me and Preston had and epic Thai dinner with Lesley and Lena and I had a FREAK OUT over Lena's shoes!!!!

I thought they were 60s vintage, I was totally wrong. They are Belgian Shoes and they have a store on the Upper East Side and I have to get a pair RIGHT AWAY. It's the kind of thing where they come in 900 thousand colors and you can make your own combos, which sometimes overwhelms me, but how cool are they? Loved Lena's almost-neon blues and greens.

Obsessed With: Stine Goya

I bought this printed cotton Stine Goya..dress-thing on the internets, sight unseen (it's basically the Sassy magazine pillowcase/dress DIY..it's a rectangle with holes for your body parts that need holes). It was a genius purchase.

It sorta has a rorschach print on it? As you can see here, where I am wearing it in from of a Warhol Rorschach. See? Rorschachs. (Ed Note: it is very pleasing to type that word).

It came with a fabric belt but guess what? SOmetiems I go rogue! Wear my own belt! Patent leather! YOU CAN'T STOP ME!

Got my nails did at Sakura again.

I can't stay away from the glitters. I'm like a magpie, its so SHINY and SPARKLEYYYY and it becomes this opaque sheet of disco light reflectors on your fingers and i CAN'T STAY AWAY.

I can peruse the options for an hour..I get really indecisive!

This time I went with lightning bolts on black on my ring fingers, neon green glitter on 8 other fings with a red heart in the center, and then the pinkie on my left hand got pink glitter, a black heart and a P. for Preston because I'm cool like that and also we are too old for letterman sweaters.

This is currently the most expensive addiction I have.

People give you the EYE when you wear these, I gotta tell ya.

3. GETTING WEIRD ON VIDEO CHATS

4. STICK N POKES

5. FINGER ARMOR
I realize this is not a new trend in rings but I just feel really smitten with this lil guy. I bought him on the street in lower Manhattaaa for about 10 bucks. I feel automatically tougher when I wear it?

6. ADIDAS WARM UP JACKETS
I was at work superlate one night and did you know that CHAMPS is open til midnight in Times Square? Well it is. And I wandered in, felt compelled to buy a warm up jacket, and wandered out. It's my new cardigan replacement (maybe not really, but I would like it to be?)- my fave way to wear it is with my overalls minidress and white Magiela clogs

7. BESAME 'RED HOT' LIPSTICK
Bought this on my ladydate with Marie a few weeks ago..it's my now preferred red. The tube is a gold old vintage bullet shape and it comes in a little red velvet pouch, it's so VERY.

I had the fortune to get a lovely little package in the mail from VEDA..Inside was a motorcycle style jacket, but made out of sheer black material, with big fat silver zippers and snaps, and soft black leather sleeves. I don't own anything like it, and I love it love it LOVE IT. I've been wearing it over all my dresses and it looks good with every skirt. I'm not exaggerating, freals.

One thing that is strange about this lil ensemble here...nothing in this outfit is vintage. That feels really strange! I guess it happens sometimes?

Crafternoon: Old Chair Is Sorta New

I live like a real grown-up now, you guys. I have furniture and stuff on the walls and I like having people over because I have NICE(ish) THINGS.

I've learned I have a bit of an addiction to chairs.
As you can imagine this is a bit of an issue in Manhattan apartment living.

They are all vintage and all have various odd prints and patterns and I like them all a lot.

Last weekend my aunt and uncle had a garage sale and I spied a pair of rattan arm chairs that were my parents'..they were in our apartment when I was a baby (I remember them really clearly- in the living room, on either side of the glass and wood coffee table- that I broke when I was 8 and tried to make an indoor slide BUTS THAT'S ANOTHER STORY) and we had them somewhere in some room of whatever house we lived in forever after that.

I assume my aunt & uncle inherited them when my parents moved back to Manhattan 10 years ago but who knows..the point is that I saw them and couldn't let them be someone's else's.

There are some broken rattan bits but the burnt orange velour seats are in impeccable condition..The label underneath says GIMBEL'S (can ya stand it?). As much as I love everything 70's, even I needed to excitebike up this situation right here.

Enter IKEA fabric, and IKEA pillow and some safety pins.

This was all technically FREE because the pillow came of of my couch (I have 2) and the fabric has been hanging around in my closet for a year.

I could have pulled my sewing machine out and turned this fun project into a chore but I DIDNT..I safety pinned that shiz and got it done in about 5 mins.
But I did do it it real reupholster styles- notched corners and folded tight. Just don't flip that cushion over or we got issues, mmkay?

Beautiful / funny / sometimes sad charts and graphs of bands/live performances/albums and feelings. They're amazing (he's done them for the NYT for years). I've known Kuo since we were teenagers but I woulda got this anyway- it's a pretty gorge object. Find this book and buy it.

Well, I DO blame society so...you know.

3. Richardson magazine, B.L.A.D. zines by Ian Stevenson
Richardson is super porny but sometimes I like to get it...The Ian Stevenson zines are my new favorite thing EVER. I am going back today to buy every one that they have. Just a lof great weird line drawings saying some kinda terrible things. He's my current art crush.

So...I had to plug may air conditioner in- THAT HAPPENED. That monumental day in every New Yorker's life is sort like when the groundhog sees his shadow- it means 800 million more days of humid shweaty unbreathable HELL. JUS KEEDING, I LOVE SUMMER ! (sorta?)

Currently I am verrrrry interested in a perfect summer weekend. Three things I need:

1. My only suitcase. Vintage, broken zippers, hard to hld for any length of time, and gives off a distinct TEEN RUNAWAY ON THE GERYHOUND vibe (very hot for SS11)

2. Ray-Ban Light Rays. 3 diff lenses (mirrored & regs are my favorite), a tiny lil case to carry the lenses you want for later. (Mine were courtesy of Sunglass Hut and you can get yr own here). I like popping the lenses in and out, there's a pleasing click to it.

3. A VW Bus. This guy was in the parking lot of the hotel I stayed in this weekend, it's the most mint condish beautiful version of heaven that I have ever seen. The longer I am in this city, the more I want a way to escape. Did I tell you that I inherited a VESPA? More on that later...

I wear this shirt like twice a week. I love you, Lover !
It's so cool and floaty. It's a cape, but it's a shirt but it's silk and really it's a cape. I ADORE IT.

Sunglass HUt sent me these Caravan sunnie g's that are pretty cool- I can switch out the lenses to either be black, mirrored, or gradations. I think you can get ones that have a colored set of lenses too. I have never owned real Ray-Bans before, I have always borrowed...how crazy is that?!?! I love these.

I was brought to Sakura by my friend Anaheed who is an old pro at this nail game- she had a plan and photos and a whole thing. I need to work up to this status, IT WAS MY FIRST TIME OKAY?!

This is an open love letter to the person who is currently the best representation on television of a teenage girl who I remember being/want to hang out with/wanna watch all the time: MAE WHITMAN, who is the awesome Amber Holt on Parenthood (the show you HAVE TO WATCH if you are not already!!!)

I can't believe I waited so long to start watching this show.
It's easily the best thing on teevee right now by far..it make sme laugh, and I almost always cry, and after every episode I want to move to Northern Cali real real bad.

It reminds me of My So-Called Life, except you get the points of view of a ton of different characters.
Plus Dax Shepard is maayyyyybeeee my dream man ( I didn't know! Parenthood taught me this!).

She is the coolest, you guys. And so funny and normally-abnormal. It's so refreshing to see an "alternative" (barf on that word) teenaged character who isn't some weird cliché of what old white guys think is is UP with kids today.

Amber wears mostly black but she isn't like some bad teevee goth and is sorta into vintage-y stuff but not really, sometimes she wears knee socks and brogues or boots and black glasses and red lips and last week she had baby bangs! But she has friends and boys dig her and she sings songs and plays the ukelele is smart and funny and moody and fun.
And Mae was Ann Hog on Arrested Development. I mean, that's just a bonus but still.

I am finally trying to catch up with all the shows..this is the first time in a million years where I haven't been trying to find the first first first pics up like 5 nanoseconds after the show is over and IT FEELS TERRIBLE. Sort of.

Prada is, of course, the exact combination of everything I never knew I wanted all at once.

There are 2 things that Miuccia always does better than almost anyone:

1. So Wrong It's Right-ness. e.g. the cheesy snakeskin print featured in this collection hasn't had this much play since the pleather pants hey day of the late 90s and in anyone else's hands I would barf, but with MP I am like..'yeah ok, I feel you. LET'S TRY IT!'. SHE KNOWS.

2. COLOR Being a genius with a color palette is hard as hell. It seems like it wouldn't be but trust me, 98% of the population sucks at color. Miuccia (and I would say Karl, in his Fendi collex) is next level. Her combinations are retro but future, surprising and exciting. RIGHT?

Um.. HELLO PINK MARY JANE, YOU WILL BE MINE. Also can we talk about a trompe-l'oeil KNEESOCK?! What in the who in the what?!?!?

These designers that show in Italy love a fucking Amelia Earhart swimcap. Marni, Jil Sander, Prada..all with this fucking hats. I love you guys for trying- AIN'T NO ONE GONNA WEAR THESE.

Guess what? I took a vacation. In fact, I am still here. I came to California to spend time with old friends and new friends and forests and trees and wine and cheese and water and stars and you know..stuff.

I hear there's like, "snow" or whatever in New York? Huh, weird. It's way warm and sunny as hell here in Northern California, so it's hard to IMAGINE this 'WINTRY MIX' you Tweet of.

I have a lot to share and probably not chronologically (them's the breaks!) because WHY MAKE IT EASY?

I went thrifting in the suburbs with my Hallie and got a ton of great stuff (no worries, all will be revealed!). THIS COAT! It was clearly waiting just for me. It's basically made out of a carpet bag.

I wore it wen I spent a few days in Big Sur with Ali. First time there, smitten OF COURSE. I mean I was naked in hot springs carved into a mountain cantilevered over the Pacific at 3 in the morning, WHY WOULDN'T I BE SMITTEN?

Friday night I met Lesley at Bell House (Which, by the way? Was located after the scariest rapiest walk I have ever taken from an F train in my life. Worst!) so that we could totally immerse ourselves in the our favorite kind of nostalgia (heartbreaky 90s, obvi) and see Evan Dando & Juliana Hatfield. Teen idols!!!!!

It was pretty fuckinnggggg magical, I won't not lie to you. Awkward and sort of heartbreaking! They sang songs they wrote about each other with each other. It was almost too much at times; Les and I kept side-eyeballing each other. I mean..she sang EVAN. IT WAS TOO MUCH! But just enough.

To honor the occasion I dressed like a superhero.

The show was cute and weird and great. He was really stoned (which was referenced often) and pretty funny and I would have preferred more early Lemonheads stuff but still. I loved every second.

Ok..speak up- who out there stared the trend of making the Pre-Fall/Resort slideshows "wackyyyy"?
There's something hilarz to me about how most fashion houses try to out-casual each other- Here, hold this bodega bag! Ooh, let's shoot it in the storage room! Show the seamless! Catch the model at awkward moments!

I'll admit I fell for the Givenchy shtick: they shot every look in the same spot on a sidewalk from morning until night. The darkest looks are set against the bright of day and the all white and lilac pieces are saved for the night. AND there are pedestrians/cars/dogs making random cameos.

It's sort of amazing.

Pre-Fall Preview: Tory Burch

I know that at first glance, White Lightning & Tory Burch may not seem like likely BFFs as there is an aspect to the TB brand that is not my sort of thing at all (the Upper East Sidery vibe, you know- the flats, etc). But there is an important common thread where me and TB are simpatico and that is a shared love for prints (not Prince) and intense color.

Pre-Fall '11 had both of those things in spades (lucky me).

Some of my favorites from the collection - which was HUGE- with top marks given to the perfect penny loafers, printed canvas wedges, and red sheer polka dots.

As you can see, we DO have a similar wavelength (with me erring on the side of BANANAYS) wearing some newly thrifted favorites. An enormous reversible cape-coat (black cotton/red wool plaid) and a sheer button-down in fluoro pink with giant white polka dots!!! A more perfect shirt has never been manufactured. Sheer polkys for all in 2011!

Another take on my "new uniform" is to swap out the crazy cardigans I am wearing right now for a cape. Sometimes 2 capes. Sometimes a capish cardigan UNDER another cape, over a lace shirt and wool skirt. I mean listen guys- I AM REALLY EXERCISING FREE WILL, you know?

Camilla & Marc sent me an uh-maaayyyyyyzing soft wool camel-colored capey thing that I am putting over everything these days, when I can get away with layers instead of my enormous puffer coat (had to give in and get a +J Uniqlo; its like wearing a sleeping bag around the city. WHO KNEW YOU COULD BE WARM DURING THE WINTER?!).

But where was I? OH RIGHT:

Isn't the double cape thing sort of dope? I love them together. Oh and I forgot to tell you- THESE SHOES ARE INSANE. I thinnnnnk they are Halloween costume shoes? Like for some girl to dress like "Sexy PeeWee" or something. They have no label and they weigh about 3 ounces but I can't get enough of them. They were 15 dollars at some crazy tiny store on a deep side street in Wlliamsburg. It was more like a closet than a store.

Wait..can we look at them again? I mean. There's velvet on there.

I think the whole outfit was sort of unconsciously (or consciously) influenced by Proenza Schouler fall feelings..evil schoolgirl sort of feelings.

I have a new uniform- Sheer button-downs buttoned way up, a tiny skirt and a giant cardigan.
AND: I finally set up (one of) my 8 track player, which I have dragged around to countless apartments since I purchased it in college.

I went on a wee spree (rhymes!) in the beginning of December and bought a bunch of new skirts and a few new/thirfted cardigans (current favorites-that aren't used- Muji!) and have been wearing them all in every combo possible. These sock garters make me feel suuuuper saucy- plus I finally have something to hold up my vintage silk stockings. I like winter very much thanks but I am looking forward to bare legged weather so these sexxxay accessories can see the outside of my house.

I love listening to 8 tracks. There is a real sense of satisfaction involved in pushing the big fat button to switch between tracks. I have a LLOYD'S player & speakers, which my dad informs me was the big deal brand back in the day. I have a pretty good selection of tapes if you don't mind me saying (and aren't the colored ones just SO aesthitically pleasing?!?) but if you have any in your attic gathering dust.. PLEASE! Send them my way!

Back in that hazy olden time we call "2010" (who can even remember that now?) I wondered: if Morrissey could get dance nights devoted to him, why can't MADONNA?
A full night of full-on Madonna Dance Party. Sounds fucking AMAZING, right? Well, Lesley agreed, signed on as my co-conspirator and got us a night at Lit.

It was last night and it was SO. MUCH. FUN.

I wore my most respectable outfit, a tee shirt that Laia gifted me many moons ago (sidenote, I am obsessed with the American Apparel sheer plaid offerings; it's as close to Christopher Kane for Versus as I am gonna get)

I don't want to brag but..we killed it. Lit was pretty packed and everyone was dancing and having a good time! Lots of wonderful familiar faces and some fans (!) and NEW FRIENDS! Plus a dance off, so much Vogue-ing and and 8 minute remisx of Don't Cry For Me, Argentina (my personal fave).

I went out on a digilimb and used my iPad to deejay and that litle wondermachine is the Christmas gift that just KEEPS ON GIVING! I love it so much, I LOVE IT.

Crafternoon: Paper Versus

My paperlove project is still keepin' on!

I focused on the Versus collection which had a perfect mash of sheer plaids and Colorform cut outs.

I added this entire collection to my folder of LOVE for the season.
So it was only natural that next on my list of most favorite SS11 bags to be rendered lovingly in construction paper was this colorblocked stunner of a clutch:

Once again..I got out my drugstore construction paper and scissors, Crayolas, a felt tip pen, Scotch tape, and glue stick.

As I like to do, the clasp is workable and opens and closes. And although you can't see the sides in this picture, I remained faithful to the detail shot above that I worked from and made the multi-colored accordion folds. So this is a fully functional bag! If you want to carry...air or anything in that approximate weight category (construction paper is not so strong)

I really really love doing this..I already know which bag will be next!

I rang in 2011 in an epic way with people I heart and admire. I sorta forgot you could have legit FUN on New Year's Eve! I have successfully ignored a megacold for the past 2 days in order for my fun to reach maximum potential.

Since I don't really dig on "resolutions", I am going to spend today watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer on my ipad and getting excited to attack 2011 at full trottle..on Monday. After I get my voice back and can breathe through my nose. SEXXXY!

IT'S CHRISTMAS! It doesn't matter how old I get, I still get a thrill outta Christmas morning- coffee in our pajamas and goofy stuff in our stockings and legit fun family times all day long.

Let's all be merry and celebrate while this tune (in my top 3 of Christmas songs- along with Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer and Dominic the Donkey) runs ceaselessly through our minds.

Presents presents presents...some for me, some for you! Well, not all of you. Mostly for my family. But that could be YOU?

Gift to myself, 2 prints from 20x200:
Lovebirds, by Luke Stephenson. I'm going to frame them and hang them over my bed.

A gift to myself, with generous help from Kate Spade!
A pair of pink patent leather flats. So perfectly different than anything I own, and therefore the obvious choice. Worn with vintage silk stockings that won't stay up (adding garters to my wishlist) to match my wrappings, bien sur bien sur.

My gifts to others! Brown kraft wrapping paper from Kate's Paperie, robin's egg blue embossed paper and neon ribbons from JAM paper store, hangtags from Target, and a few assorted strings and fabric strips that I reused for ribbons (for boy presents).

On top of these various delights, everyone gets homemade compost cookies. I mean am I a great gift-giver OR WHAT?

I attended one of my favorite of all Christmas parties last weekend, the annual Walter & Melissa Martin holiday situation. Their apartment is beautiful, the people are fun and the food is amazing. I like to imagine that each machine-gun toting ski-masked bank robber is lovingly hand-crafted by old women who use the tweezers of their ancestors to place each and every rhinestone on this charming piece. Love that they left the gun unadorned, so chic don't you think?

I'm noooooot entirely sure how to put last Friday's experience into words..but I'll try; for you friends..for you. I had the extreme pleasure and honor of being invited to the first Miu Miu Musings, an intimate salon that will be held to discuss a variety of topics..we began with What Is Fashion, hosted by Shala Monroque and led by Andre Leon Talley.

I mean.

..What IS Fashion, anyway right?

Based on the slightly surreal experience of the other night, fashion is a lot of things.

It's a small brightly lit room full of chartreuse brocade (I love it so so much) full of Major Looks, Andre Leon Talley's stories about Madame Vreeland, the new Cleopatra book, fantastic books and gorgeous candies, pronouncing it MAH-NAY-KHAN instead of the way perhaps you and I say MANNEQUIN, a gorgeously lithe girl in a golden turban and shocking red knit minidress, Mrs Obama's mix, wishing to be Julia Restoin for a day, a fur muff the size of a king size pillowcase, and teenaged sons of supermodels that have to be seen to be believed. Teenaged sons that at ages 14 & 16 wear Dior Homme suits and full Galliano sequined outfits and multiple diamond rings. (Yes. I am serious..please look to the photos and spot his creative tie placement)

And for added ecstacy..the Miu Miu SS11 collection was out for fondling.

Moments of magicalness, right this way:

I wore a vintage psychedelic polyester dress, my Brook&Lyn surrounded necklace, and Ernie the Mandy Coon x OfAKind bunny bag.

ALT asked who made my dress and I said it was thrift !!! I didn't want to lie and I felt fine being myself. And he LOVED the bunny bag! VERY EXCITING, very surreal, very insane, very incredible.

Thank you ALT, thank you Shala, thank you Miu Miu !

Last week I stopped by the delicious lil jewel that is the new storefront & studio of White Lightning love Wendy Nichol (147 Sullivan St.). In the hour or so I hung out, the customers varied from a Mom buying multiple necklaces-wrapped as gifts- for herself and a kooky college gal with pink streaks and the weirdest boots ever to and old friend of mine from the Times who stopped in to say hi.

There are the usual whipstitched gorgeous bags (leather, ponyhair and a SECRET SPRING COLLAB)

And now Wendy has started knitting...SCARVES and WRAPS and..wall art?

I was inspired by Angie while she was doing The Uniform Project (who in turn was inspired by SBubbs, an old-school upside-downer). Try this right now, life is gonna change!

Also who knew these clogs would be such a hit? On sale and calling me with their dark suede-y siren song..I was powerless to walk away.

I'm relieved to report that I can actually COMMUTE in them- uneven streets and stairways are no match AND I am way way taller than usual. Plus ladies are stopping me on the street about where I got them and that is always fun.

Other thoughts: My bangs look like I cut them with a butter knife (cool or cool?).

It seems I wait until the winter to bust out the monochromes; as of late it's blacks n whites, 2 colors that are not usually that prevalent in my wardrobe...but the theme keeps popping up

1. My well-loved Wendy Nichol bullet bag. The white leather is getting a bit grimy but I think I like it that way.

2. Standard winter look: black swoolen slouchy capecoat with toggles (thrifted! gift from my sister), Yokoo Pembroke cowl in oatmeal, Wendy Nichol bag, Topshop 120 den black tights (BEST for opaqueness & price!), Maison Martin Margiela white clogs

3. Detail of my Yokoo cowl..I am now starting my 3rd winter of wearing it most every day (I was an early supporter!). It's a scarf, a hood, a poncho-depending on the day. I get compliments constantly- everyone wants one.

4. Just Kids by Patti Smith. I read this in 2 days and want to read it again and again...I CRIED at the end! Keep in mind I have maybe heard a PS song once in my life (I am an aesthetic fan, but not really into her beyond that?).What I AM a fan of is old New York. Ya know- the times when you could run into Jimi Hendrix on St Marks Place and you bought grilled cheese for like 30 cents at automats. If you love a story of another weirder, freer, hippier time..you will love this book.

5. This sweater was 3 dollars at the church thrift store on 21st Street and I am in love with it. Not FULLY black and white but close enough. It's gleefully bulky and squishy and soft. Totes looks Opening Ceremony-ish, no?

6. Ernie, my Mandy Coon x Of A Kind bunny bag!!! He has a black SEQUIN EYE! And a black leather butt. I love you, Ernie.

To refresh your memory (which may be like mine, that is to say akin to a goldfish):

They remind me strongly of a late 90s PRADA SPORT vibe (although those were a wedge, I had the WILD PAIR knock-offs, mmkaayyy?).

Really, I hope you aren't rolling your eyes or pretending to dry heave because lest any of you FERGET...Nicolas Ghesquiere loves a practical/unpractical hybrid, with either Legos, hockey helmets or maybe a bike chain thrown together with Velcro and Birkenstock soles. I MEAN WHY NOT, right.
